With the ridiculously hot weather we’ve been having lately, I’ve been dying to make a refreshing homemade drink to cool down with. When it comes to summer drinks, absolutely none of them are as popular as lemonade!
I’ve always wanted to try making lemonade from scratch, but the thought of having to squeeze a ton of lemons turned me off of the idea.
Since this food blog is now a part time job, it’s given me a bit more motivation to finally make my own homemade lemonade, no matter how tedious and annoying lemon squeezing is.
But this is no ordinary lemonade. Today is National Watermelon Day, so I thought — why not make watermelon flavoured lemonade?
Now I’m not a huge fan of eating watermelon, but I always loved drinking it. I was that weird kid who would suck the water out of the watermelon without actually eating the fruit. I couldn’t help it, it was so refreshing!
So combine my urge to make from scratch lemonade and my love for watermelon juice and you’ve got this sweet and slightly tart watermelon lemonade.
HOW TO MAKE WATERMELON LEMONADE
This lemonade starts off with fresh, chilled watermelon that’s been cut into cubes. You’ll need about 7-10 cups which is around 2 – 3 pounds of watermelon. I highly recommend using seedless watermelon so you won’t have to go through the process of straining out the seeds.
Add the watermelon cubes to a food processor or blender and blend until all the chunks of watermelon have broken up and you’re left with the juice.
Here comes the least fun part: juicing the lemons. For this recipe you’re gonna need 1 and ½ cups of fresh lemon juice which equals to about 6-8 lemons.
TIPS FOR JUICING LEMONS
- Warm Lemons: Make sure the lemons are at room temperature, or even better, microwave each lemon for about 15-20 seconds before juicing. Warmed lemons produce up to 30 – 40% more juice!
- Squeezing: Another thing I like to do to get as much lemon juice as possible is to put the halved lemon in between a pair of tongs and squeeze. I then use a spoon to scoop out the remaining juice. This method allows me to get up to ¼ – ⅓ cup of juice per lemon.
Next we’ll add a few cups of water and some sugar. The amount of sugar depends entirely on your own personal taste. I myself prefer a sweeter lemonade so I used 1 and ½ cups, but if you don’t want yours to be too sweet, you can add less.
I suggest starting off with about ½ – 1 cup of sugar, tasting the lemonade, then adding more ¼ cup at a time until you reach the desired sweetness.
Finally we’ll add the watermelon purée. Aside from the delicious fruity taste, my favourite thing about this lemonade is the gorgeous reddish/pink colour that the watermelon adds! It’s such a beautiful summery colour!
Once everything is mixed together, I like to refrigerate the lemonade until it’s completely chilled. This makes the taste sooooo much more refreshing! When you’re ready to serve, throw in some lemon slices, ice cubes and watermelon wedges.
Stay cool in this insane heat with this cold summery lemonade. It’s the perfect balance between sweet and tart and it’s bursting with watermelon flavour! This is the perfect drink to serve at a BBQ, summer party or to simply enjoy next to the air conditioner, like I do.
